Silver Claddaghs - Symbolic Irish rings
If tradition is
truly what you are seeking in your Claddagh ring, there is no better choice than
silver Claddaghs. For, it was simple –yet timeless—silver that Richard Joyce
chose to craft the first Claddagh ring with nearly 400 years ago. Why did Joyce
choose silver? We don’t know for sure, but since it is believed he crafted the
ring while a slave, silver was probably the only metal he had on hand.
While the silver Claddagh ring comes from humble beginnings, there is nothing
humble about what it represents. Like Joyce’s original ring, a traditional
silver Claddagh has a bezel cut or cast in the form of two hands (symbolizing
friendship) clasping a heart (symbolizing love) topped with a crown (symbolizing
loyalty). A traditional silver Claddagh lets the ring’s meaning speak for itself
without embellishment.
Today, though, Claddagh rings of sterling silver do come with other options. One
more recent and popular option is setting a stone (such as an emerald) in a
silver Claddagh. This makes an especially meaningful birthday, Confirmation,
graduation, anniversary, or “push” gift (a gift given to a new mother by her
husband when their child is born). Another option is a two-toned Claddagh ring
with both silver and gold accents.
